JESSICA MCCURRY Hometown: Philadelphia, PA College: P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science Major: Industrial and Systems Engineering Describe one of your proudest accomplishments. My proudest accomplishment at Lehigh University is the work that I’ve done with my Global Social Impact Fellowship through the Office of Creative Inquiry. My project is called Breathe Almaty, and it aims to mitigate the effects of air pollution in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Currently, we are building air monitors, air filters, and conducting a study to show how air quality impacts cognitive ability. This opportunity has allowed me to make a noticeable difference and has taught me so much about myself and the world. Lehigh’s strategic plan, Inspiring the Future Makers, is built upon the notion that “The way forward is not yet defined. The future is ours for the making.” How do you intend to make your mark on campus and beyond? I intend to make my mark on campus and beyond by mentoring. Over the summer, I worked at Lehigh’s Summer Engineering Institute and mentored 100 high school students during two two-week programs to learn about engineering. Through the Mentor Collective, I have met four freshmen and have helped ease their transition into college life. I was also a mentor for the PreLUsion program and Lehigh Women Engineers, which allowed me to connect with incoming women in STEM. I hope to inspire the next generation of engineers, especially once I have graduated and begin working in the industry. A message from Jessica: Without the help of scholarships and financial aid, I would not be able to attend Lehigh University. I wasn’t aware of this when I decided to attend Lehigh, but this school is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Not only have I made lifelong friends here, I have also grown immensely as a person. I have learned many life lessons and have been given so many amazing opportunities. Just today, I got hired for a Life Safety and Fire Protection Engineering Internship. I didn’t even know that this type of engineering existed until two weeks ago. Lehigh has unlocked a life path that will allow me to achieve my dreams. Fun Fact: I have a pet bunny.
