147 Number of 2020-21 Stabler Scholars who identify as first-generation college students They moved internships online. They journaled. They came to virtual classrooms from on- and off-campus housing and from homes in 33 states and territories and four countries. They learned to appreciate small joys — time to read, time spent with family — and continued to connect with Lehigh mentors and friends around the globe. They’re still learning, every day, how to take care of themselves and give back to their communities in new and increasingly important ways. COVID-19 closed campus in the spring of their first year, and their sophomore year transpired almost entirely online during the pandemic. This is a time of hybrid learning, testing, vigilance, and resolve. For Lehigh’s Class of 2023, the promise of a future unburdened by financial strain became more critical than ever. At a time when so much can feel uncertain, support from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Scholarship shows students their future at Lehigh doesn’t have to be . Because even in times of uncertainty, there are things you can count on: Lehigh students are exceptional and engaged — the definition of resilient. They’re learning new technologies, imagining what the next advance might be and how they can be a part of it; they’re contributing to their local and global communities and considering the social impacts of innovation. They’re being inspired by Lehigh’s faculty and staff; they’re inspiring each other. And, as Stabler Scholars, they’re inspired by the kindness of someone they may never know — their studies at Lehigh, their own lives and futures, are living proof of the power of giving back. This year’s Stabler Scholars face unprecedented challenges, yet they not only endure but grow. They keep going .
