2021 Stabler Donor Impact Report R4
BUSINESS Name: Carlos Torres Hometown: Coamo, PR Major: Finance Class: 2023 Favorite activity: Baseball Favorite faculty or staff: Professor Deirdre Malacrea, Marketing Dream job: Professional Baseball Player Attending Lehigh gives me the opportunity to improve my baseball abilities while earning a very recognizable degree at the same time. I have always dreamed about playing in Major League Baseball, and being at Lehigh puts me at a very advan- tageous point. The athletic staff here is always pushing me and helping me become the best player I can be. On the academic side, I have always been interested in the business world, espe- cially the stock market. A diploma from Lehigh makes it easier to land a good position in an organization. Employers know the good quality of individuals that come out of here. Every aspect of Lehigh helps me achieve both my academic and athletic goals. The thing that inspires me the most at Lehigh is the hunger to achieve my goals and be someone that other people could look up to. I have gone so far with this mindset, and I’m going to keep using it until I reach everything I want to be in life. I have always been a good student, and I make a promise to myself before every semester that I will have a GPA above a 3.0. In academics, I can see my progress through grades and know if I have to step it up or not, and in athletics, I have my statistics that drive me to get better. The grades and statistics help keep me accountable and focused throughout my journey here. At Lehigh, my favorite professor is Deirdre Malacrea. She is always looking out for her students and making sure they understand the material. She manages to incorporate interactive teaching even during the pandemic. Her class is my favorite class this year by far. She presents current news in class and tells us how the concepts from class apply to it. Professor Malacrea’s career in industry gives us an insider’s view of the marketing world in real life. While my major is finance, this class has made me reevaluate if that’s the best choice for me. Giving back means to help those less fortunate in a certain community. For example, throughout my journey in baseball, I have had many people help me in different ways. As a token of appreciation, if I am in a good position, I would like to give back to the baseball community just like those before did for me. I am extremely grateful, and I would not be at Lehigh without my financial aid. I come from Puerto Rico with a lifelong dream of playing baseball professionally. During my junior year of high school, I got the chance to receive a scholarship at a prep school not far from Lehigh. I used to take drives through Lehigh and dreamed about attending and playing baseball here. Without the help of the Stabler Scholarship, it would have been really hard for me to attend Lehigh. Thank you for helping me make my dream come true.
